TIBETAN REFUGEES IN NEPAL

There are a lot more than 20, 500 Tibetan refugees living in about 12 settlements across the country. Yet , the true number of Tibetan political refugees is unfamiliar. Some estimates suggest that 35, 000 Tibetans live in Kathmandu alone.   While some Tibetan refugees arrived in Nepal in the early 1955s, the initially major inflow crossed the border in 1959, following the Lhasa Uprising. They established camps primarily inside the Himalayan boundary regions of Nepal such as Mustang, Nubri, and Solu Khumbu. However , handful of possessed the means to create settlements with long-term monetary viability. By 1961, most of the refugees confronted serious food shortages and suffered from deficiencies in adequate shield and health-related. In May 60, Nepal expected assistance from the International Committee of the Crimson Cross (ICRC) and other help organizations. The ICRC established emergency comfort programs pertaining to the political refugees. These programs were funded mostly by United States Organization for Foreign Development. Reacting to the refugees' plight, the Tibetan federal government established the Kathmandu Tibetan Welfare Business office, a subset of the Tibetan Ministry of Home Affairs. The Tibetan Welfare Workplace functioned as a liaison between refugees, several aid agencies, and the Nepalese government. Also called the Office of Tibet, it continues to serve this essential role today. In the early 1960s, the Nepalese government established four " temporary” Settlements pertaining to the Tibetan refugees: 1 )  Chialsa, inside the Solu Khumbu mountain selection east of Kathmandu; installment payments on your  Tashi Palkhiel, on the borders of Pokhara;

3. В Dhorpatan, in traditional western Nepal; and

4. В Jawalakhel, on the the southern area of edge of Kathmandu.
