Anyone can edit (nearly) any page on BingWiki!

If you want to edit a page, just login using the link on the left column. Once logged in, simply click the "edit" link above nearly any page's title. You can create an account if necessary in about 2 minutes. Only a very small number of pages have been protected and cannot be edited. (need specific help? contact an administrator)

Editing guidelines

A note on style: The BingWiki point of view is not the Wikipedia point of view. In particular, non-neutrality is expected, opinion is expected to be expressed. We'd rather be too opinionated than too bland.

Unadulterated marketing language will be removed or rewritten. Users who consistently post marketing will be sanctioned. If you feel an article is overtly promotional, please help by rewriting it or adding it to Category:Suspiciously upbeat.

Formatting / Mark-Up

BingWiki uses the MediaWiki software, which provides web pages describing how to format your text:

Linking & Merging

To link to another page, just put its title in brackets, like this: Title here. Or you can use different text for links to other pages. So you can say SML Building, which will look like this: SML Building, but really link to the Security Mutual Building page.

To link to another website, put the address and a description in brackets and separate them by a space. For example, Pressconnects will display like this: Pressconnects.

To merge a page, add the content from the old page to the new page, and then replace all the text on the old page with the redirect code: #REDIRECT New title

So for instance, Celtic Kazoo got this code: #REDIRECT Broome County Celtic Kazoos, which makes the Celtic Kazoo page go to the Broome County Celtic Kazoos page.

Categorizing

You can help keep the wiki organized by categorizing pages (such as restaurants or radio stations or playgrounds) by putting this code on a page:

We have a lot of categories -- the full list is at Special:Categories, but don't worry about using the right or wrong one, since someone else will adjust the category if it's not what the other pages have.

You can link (not categorize) to a category page like this: a list of restaurants (note the ":" before Category!). That link will look like this: a list of restaurants, and when people click on it, they will see a link to every page on this site that is a restaurant.

Photos & Files

You can add photos and other files to the site on this page: Special:Upload

To insert the photo on a page, just use the code displayed on the page after you upload the file.

Best Practices

Linking

Link the first instance of Binghamton on each page. (if we do this enough, maybe someone will make that page useful?)

Dealing with time

Date your information as appropriate. For example, entries on the Dick's Open page have the year next to them.

Keep outdated information. Add new information to the page where it seems logical. Edit the old information to show when it was valid. Don't delete articles for defunct businesses. On a street page, indent the old listing and title it "Formerly:".

Dealing with space

Wherever possible, add photos to make a connection between the text and the physical location.

Update the street page for the appropriate street when you add a business or building description. (example: Court Street)

Tell what is nearby. (example: "Between Flashbacks Nightclub and Dillinger's Pub")

Dealing with opinion

Tell what you think, but make it clear that what you are writing is opinion.

Categorize articles with a review or testimonial (such as services or restaurants) as .
