Science and Mysticism: Light beer Compatible?

. Dab Duffy Hutcheon,  Humanist in Canada (Winter 1996/97), p. 20-24. KEY TERMS:  mysticism -- transcendentalism -- indeterminacy -- Chaos Theory -- systems introduction -- the anthropic theory -- details -- globe view -- Cosmological Evidence -- postmodernism -- scientific attitude -- contingent causality Much has become written in recent times to the effect that research, in its uppr reaches, merges into mysticism. It is often stated, by specific New Age physicists and astronomers, that Atraditional" premises about order in nature, and the objective of objectivity in expertise, are no longer justified. Proponents of this view argue that twentieth 100 years advances in physics have shown a reality chaotic in its best " essence". They claim this facilitates the conclusion associated with an arbitrariness on the very primary of presence: a scientifically unpredictable interference by a few transcendental " holistic" pressure or Brain. And they may have us believe the basic principle of indeterminacy -- while articulated by simply Heisenberg -- necessarily indicates a human species reflecting merely such an irrationality in its hypostatic being. In addition, they now put, the new " chaos" theory confirms the actual mystics have been saying every along. Mother nature, at all amounts, is with out internal purchase. All -- all is definitely mystery, it appears, and we must seek fresh, more appropriate techniques for tapping into the Creative Oneness above and beyond the chaos of " knowable" experience. Were told that people must learn to believe in the " unknowable", even though we never can know it in any scientifically predictable sense. And must acknowledge the " fact"  that observation and analysis are but crude and limited tools inside the search for that mystical Real truth of transcendent " chaos" -- of which the uniquely advanced physicist, in the outer edge of human being knowledge, features only recently become dimly aware. This kind of comes across towards the layman since powerful and convincing products. If even leading physicists are intimating that mystical explanations will be, in fact , clinical -- and the particular kind of scientific justification which we have known in the past is inherently limiting to human understanding -- then, surely, it has profound ramifications for how we think about reality regarding our existence within this. Perhaps, state many the rest of us, we should be hearing the mystics in our middle, if we want to understand themselves and each of our surroundings, rather than to those whom profess to rely on reason and data. At the very least, in accordance to this debate, we should be ready to grant similar status to both the mystical and the scientific -- especially in the your life sciences. To perform less (we are told) is to expose an cockiness and intolerance totally away of keeping with democratic values of flexibility and pluralism in the industry of suggestions. I plan to argue that the top plausibility with the position defined above is usually both deceiving and hazardous to human progress. It is misleading for 2 reasons. It relies on a great unwarranted jump of logic, as well as a misinterpretation of the principle of indeterminacy and of the chaos theory of modern compound physics. The illogicality from the mystics' summary results from their particular strange leap from a human perception of randomness in nature to a conclusion concerning arbitrary direction and superhuman purpose encased in some type of collective Cleverness or transcendental Mind. The second fallacy is because of a common misunderstanding concerning the mother nature of the randomness discussed simply by physicists: a misunderstanding stemming chiefly from a dilemma of the various meanings of determined. Heisenberg was referring to our efforts at measurement -- not to the " essential" nature of the reality all of us seek to evaluate. The velocity and position of a particle happen to be " indeterminate" in that (given our present conceptual and technical instruments) both may not be accurately scored at one and the same time. That is not mean that these...
