Many traditions passed down through decades have almost no significance in society, the majority of traditions will be passed down overtime because specific individuals are scared of the consequences. In a village, there exists a yearly traditions that at random selects one person to be stoned by the entire village. This kind of tradition is referred to as " The Lottery. ” In " The Lottery, ” Shirley Jackson combines foreshadowing having a comforting sculpt thus equally concealing and revealing the shocking ending.

Shirley Jackson's utilization of a good-hearted tone leaves readers naive of the ironic ending. It is also called a lottery, wherever lotteries are generally associated with best of luck and fortune. Readers may assume " The Lottery” is also an indicator of good fortune and lot of money. Jackson's placement of details units a positive strengthen for the storyline along with a mixture of foreshadowing.
